The holidays are here and as we all know, ‘tis the season to be spending time with the family and the people we cherish most. While tapping the photo button is easy, sometimes taking a good video or picture isn’t. Here are just a couple of tips for making the most of our technology this holiday season.
First and foremost, it’s a good rule of thumb to never use the phone’s digital zoom. Most smartphone cameras are not zooming optically like a real camera would and are instead enlarging the picture digitally. This can cause pixelation and a blurrier picture or video.
Lighting can make or break a picture or video. When shooting indoors always try to position your subject facing a light source and never in front of one. This will cause the subject to be cast in a shadow and the picture will come out much too dark. Sometimes there’s just too much light facing your subject — that’s where your smartphone can really come in handy. Tapping your subject will set the focus and exposure to an optimal level given the light provided. Tapping the subject and holding the screen until “AE/AF LOCK” appears will lock the exposure in place so you don’t have to worry about shifting exposure during a video if you move around.
While not essential, tripods will always yield a better-looking photo and video and allow the whole family to be in a picture with your phone’s self-timer function. The one linked is inexpensive and widely versatile with its flexible legs.
